The Exaltation of the Holy Cross
‘For God so loved the world that He gave His one and only son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish but have eternal life.’
John 3: 13-17
When I lost my eldest son, by drowning some years ago, this proclamation, ‘For God so loved the world that He gave His one and only son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish but have eternal life.’ took on a whole new meaning for me.
I began to reflect on the anguish and despair I felt and wondered if it was the same for God the Father. A father should never lose a son…and to think that God ‘gave’ his son willingly for my sake, was at first incomprehensible.
With time I began to reflect on the meaning of love and the Marriage Encounter phrase – To Love is a Decision.
I still struggle to understand, but now I have a new appreciation of what – ‘The Love of God’ means. Thank you, Lord, for this new appreciation of your love and help me to embrace it.
