God reveals to the humble the true source of happiness.
Luke 6:20-26
Jesus begins his teaching about the way to the kingdom of heaven by explaining where true happiness is found. The word beatitude means happiness or blessedness. Jesus’ way of happiness requires transformation. This transformation of heart and mind can only come about through the gift of the Holy Spirit.
Jesus goes on to talk about happiness in poverty, hunger, mourning, and persecution. But how? The only possible answer must be by emptying from our hearts all that is not of God
So, poverty of spirit finds room and joy in possessing God as the greatest wealth possible. Hunger of the spirit seeks nourishment and strength in God’s word and Holy Spirit. Sorrow and mourning over sin provide freedom from guilt. God reveals to the humble the true source of happiness.
“Lord, increase my hunger for you and show me the way that leads to everlasting happiness and peace. May I desire you above all else and find perfect joy in doing your will.”
