If you say so, I will pay out the nets
Luke 5: 1 – 11
At a training session on effective listening the instructor said “people listen to respond rather than listen to the message” which stuck with me ever since.
As trinis, we like to ‘answer back’, as we say, even when it is not required. When Jesus told Simon “Put out into deep water and pay out your nets for a catch” He already knew that they did not catch anything for the night. Simon’s response “if you say so, I will pay out the nets” at times reads a bit sarcastic.
I begin to think of times Jesus was trying to talk to me and I may have been trying to respond and make excuses unnecessarily rather than truly listening to what Jesus was saying.
I pray today for the gift of stillness in my prayer life and when listening to the word of God to hear what God is telling me.
