Friday August 19th: Love – At the root of it all

When love is our guiding principle our actions can only be good.

Matthew 22: 34 – 40

To the Pharisee who asked him which was the greatest commandment of the Law, Jesus said that the whole Law and the Prophets hang on two basic commands, which are to love God with one’s entire being and to love one’s neighbour as oneself. Love then is the guiding principle.

In his teaching on love, St. Augustine maintains that human actions are at their best when rooted in love. It implies whatever we do must be rooted in love, driven by love and bear fruits of love. When love is our guiding principle our actions can only be good.

To love God sincerely and truly can only lead to a holier life. To love one’s neighbour sincerely and truly can only lead to more genuine relationships. Nobody appreciates a two-faced person. It neither leads to true devotion to God nor loving actions towards others.

Love should set the tone for our entire lives. That means we do not love God only at Church or our neighbour only when it is convenient.
