Monday, August 15th: The Presence of Jesus

The Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary

“For behold, when the sound of your greeting came to my ears, the baby in my womb leaped for joy”

Luke 1:39-56

How do people feel when they see us coming? Is there a feeling of joy, excitement, and peace, knowing that we will brighten their day and make their burden lighter, or is there a sigh of “Oh gosh, not now nah!”? Clearly, this was not the case with Elizabeth and John, the babe in her womb, as Mary approached. John recognized the presence of Jesus, the Messiah, in Mary, and he ‘leaped for joy’.

Likewise, the presence of Jesus in our lives is supposed to bring joy to others and bring them closer to God. In order for this to happen, we must be open to receiving Jesus, who is the essence of love, peace, and joy in the world.

Through Mary’s humility and acceptance of the angel’s words, Jesus came into the world, and that is why we can celebrate her Assumption into heaven today.

Lord, help me to receive Jesus in my life so that I can bring joy to those around me, as Mary did.
