Friday August 12th: A Sacred Bond

Jesus believed that marriage was a sacred bond for life because he valued faithfulness and commitment.

Matthew 19: 3 – 12

The question, in today’s passage is, “Is it against the Law for a man to divorce his wife on any pretext whatever?”  ‘Any pretext’ suggests that the reason could be serious or trivial which can make marriage seem like trial and error. That cheapens the covenant.

The Bible has a high regard for marriage. It is used to describe the relationship between God and His people. It is used as a symbol of the kingdom of God. It is used to describe the relationship between Jesus and the Church. Married couples witness to faithfulness and commitment. To use divorce as the answer to marital difficulties, whether serious or trivial, is to make faithfulness and commitment inconsequential. Jesus believed that marriage was a sacred bond for life because he valued faithfulness and commitment.

With good reason Jesus said that those who opt for divorce do so because they have become hard-hearted. They have closed themselves to making a greater effort to safeguard this special sacred bond and the value of faithfulness.
