Friday August 5th: Surrendering all

To have Jesus is to have everything.

Matthew 16: 24 – 28

Jesus speaks on the condition of discipleship in today’s passage. He says, “If anyone wants to be a follower of mine, let him renounce himself and take up his cross and follow me”. What does it mean to renounce self?

To renounce self is to completely surrender to Jesus. Our surrender is saying yes to Jesus’ will for us. His sole intention is to lead us into eternal life. To surrender to him is to want Jesus above everything else. To have Jesus is to have everything.

Jesus is Lord and Saviour. Therefore, the first and greatest commandment apply to him, that we love the Lord our God with all our heart and mind and soul and strength. Total surrender to Jesus is not just a nice idea. It is a life decision.

Egoistic humanity tends to love self, wants to conquer all and desires to stand as champion on top of the world. Jesus is asking us to surrender these needs and allow his reign and will to govern our lives.
