Monday August 1st: Feed the hungry

Give them something to eat yourselves

Matthew 14: 13 – 21

Sometimes it really helps to put situations in context to really understand the significance of the message. Many people in biblical times knew food insecurity and struggled for adequate food and nutrition, which continues today in many parts of the world.

The disciples, knowing they only had 5 loaves and 2 fish that had to be shared for at least the 12 disciples and Jesus, said, “Send them away to buy themselves some food”. Jesus, knowing God’s will that hungry people be fed, replied,  “Give them something to eat yourselves”.

God emphasizes feeding the hungry throughout the Bible. Like the manna from heaven in Exodus and the meal and oil of the widow Zarephath in 1 Kings, God intervenes here to multiply the limited resources to feed His people.

I pray today that I always remember to feed God’s hungry people, both physically and spiritually so we may all eat and be filled with His love.
