Tuesday July 26th: Simple things bring great joy

Sts Joachim and Anne

“Blessed are your eyes, because they see, …”

Matthew 13: 16-17

My husband and I are not young but became first-time grandparents recently. From hearing of the pregnancy to birth, we prayed a simple prayer for this child. “Blessed be the fruit of your womb.” My daughter-in-law’s testimony is not mine to give, but we all know he is a miracle baby.

We have grown into a deeper appreciation of the blessings that only come from God. As my husband faces eye surgery, the words “blessed are your eyes for they see” take on another level of meaning: from the spiritual to the physical. We had put all our hope and trust in God for those nine months and now we are able to see and touch little hands and feet. Simple things that bring great joy should never be taken for granted.

Today we celebrate the feast of Sts. Joachim and Anne, grandparents of Jesus. It is our sincere prayer that we have passed on to our son, very practical examples of faith which he will transmit to our grandbaby.
