“For my yoke is easy, and my burden light.”
Matthew 11: 28-30
It is so easy to misunderstand this quotation, from today’s Gospel passage, in modern day culture, where comfort and wealth are the measurement of a successful life.
The quotation, I believe, is counter-cultural. It speaks of the happiness of a virtuous life. Jesus is not promising an easy laid-back life of material riches. He is promising the deep joy of a life in the spirit, which in fact, from the lives of saints, can be very demanding.
The rest Jesus promises in today’s Gospel passage is that of being meek and humble of heart. It is the letting go of the demands and slavery to one’s ego, a never-ending struggle to justify oneself in the eyes of the world.
