Faith and farming – Cornelius Campbell, Paramin farmer

Eco-Agriculture

We are particularly excited about this supplement’s theme: Eco-agriculture. According to Green Peace, eco-agriculture or eco-farming “combines modern science and innovation with respect for nature and biodiversity. It ensures healthy farming and healthy food. It protects the soil, the water and the climate. It does not contaminate the environment with chemical inputs or use genetically engineered crops.” Given the continued pleas by scientists, environmentalists and activists to find ways to protect our Earth, Pope Francis’ call to responsibility and care in his encyclical Laudato Si’, and that the just-celebrated Corpus Christi feast is a traditional planting day, the team felt the theme apt.

We were pleased to discover the many innovators in the field who offer alternate methods of farming, organic products, and humane systems with the vision of providing food security and healthier options for their consumers. See pages B6 to B8.

On a more personal note, I had the joy of off-roading in Paramin to find this issue’s leader — Cornelius ‘Ryie’ Campbell, a farmer and agro-processor— on bringing his faith to bear in his work. Deep in the mountainside of Paramin, Campbell grows ginger, chives, thyme and celery among other produce. You may have seen his seasoning on the grocery shelves, ‘Mal’s Seasoning’. This warm, humble and generous gentleman offers lessons in employee/ employer relations, love of work, and charity and kindness to his fellowman.
