Thursday June 16th: Use What You Have

“Give them something to eat yourselves”

Luke 9:11-17

The Twelve were worried about the five thousand men who had followed them to this lonely place. Now that it was late evening, they proposed to send them to the villages and farms for food and lodging. Jesus challenged the Apostles: “Give them something to eat yourselves”. From the little they had, just five loaves and two fish, Jesus not only fed the crowd, but twelve baskets filled with the scraps were collected.

Similarly, a young couple started their marriage with very little just “five loaves and two fish” and even that, over the years, were “broken” and “shared out”. Nevertheless, in time, they were able to reap the benefits of “twelve baskets full” of faithfulness, humility, and belief in God’s goodness.

On this feast of Corpus Christi, just as Jesus offered the five loaves and two fish to be blessed, broken and shared out, we ask for courage to do the same with our lives and, in time, fill twelve baskets full of joy. Amen
