Wednesday June 8th: Modelling His Love

‘Do not imagine that I have come to abolish the Law or the Prophets.’

Matthew 5: 17-19

We often live by the dictum that change is inevitable. Though this is well accepted we, however, have to be wary of what we are changing. Jesus, in this gospel today, is telling us about what we should not change, as he says, ‘Not one little stroke shall disappear from the Law until its purpose is achieved.’

We have learnt that the Greatest Commandment, as Jesus said, is to love God with our heart and soul and our neighbour as ourselves (Mt 22.38). Often, however, we find ourselves rationalising and giving the commandment a spin to suit ourselves.

A colleague once told me that you have to love yourself first, in order to love your neighbour.

Jesus, by example, showed us what love means by giving himself totally for us. In his ministry he was always helping someone and finally he gave his life for us. Are we ready to love like that?
