Jesus healed Peter of his past so that he could lead others to healing.
John 21: 15 – 19.
After they had eaten, Jesus asked Peter, three times, if he loved him. Why Peter and not any of the others? We must keep in mind that Peter denied Jesus three times during his passion. Also, we must keep in mind Peter has been identified as the chief shepherd after Jesus.
Three reasons come to mind concerning Jesus’ question to Peter. Firstly, Jesus gave Peter a chance to undo the triple denial he did earlier. Secondly, Peter now stands as the chief shepherd, but also as a forgiven sinner. And thirdly, Jesus healed Peter of his past so that he could lead others to healing.
This passage is for us today as much as it was for Peter then. Peter is an example of the journey of all Christians. All have sinned, but Jesus helps everyone to pick themselves up and move on. Jesus always heals all who are broken, he invites all disciples to pledge their love for him every day and he invites every disciple to follow him.
