Pope Francis begins his landmark encyclical and open letter to humanity, Laudato Si’, with a direct instruction as to how we should love and treat with the Earth.
“Our common home is like a sister with whom we share our life and a beautiful mother who opens her arms to embrace us. ‘Praise be to you, my Lord, through our Sister, Mother Earth, who sustains and governs us, and who produces various fruit with coloured flowers and herbs.’”
This year, May 22–29, marks the seventh anniversary of Laudato Si’ and the Holy Father is calling upon the global Catholic community to act now for climate justice and to reverse the dire effects of climate change.
According to climate.gov, “Since 2000, the global atmospheric carbon dioxide amount has grown by 43.5 ppm, an increase of 12 percent.” As such Pope Francis’ call for action must be heard. Our world urgently needs change and action at an individual and societal level.
We at the Catholic News are committed to journeying with our community and are partnering with key stakeholders to sound the alarm and provide channels and ideas so we can each make a change in our world.
