Open your heart to the transformative power of love and it will guide all your desires, thoughts and actions.
John 13:21-35
Many years ago I asked a priest ‘What is a good Christian, what is a good Catholic?’ . ‘It is their position on abortion, whether they support abortion or not.’ He answered. Needless to say, this is to reduce Christianity to a single moral issue. It makes our faith, very, very small.
Abortion IS important and we defend human life and human dignity at all stages. In John’s gospel, no moral issue decides who is a Christian. The only criterion is love. Jesus says: ‘’By this love you have for one another, everyone will know that you are my disciples.” Love guides and shapes our moral concerns. Thus, when the search for Justice is emptied of love, it quickly degenerates into finger-pointing and revenge.
Augustine said a long time ago: “Love and do what you will.” In other words, open your heart to the transformative power of love and it will guide all your desires, thoughts and actions. Lord, help us to open our hearts to love. Amen.
