Jesus knew what he was going to offer them.
John 6: 1 – 15
The crowds followed Jesus because they were impressed by the signs he gave. They simply loved a good magic show. They probably could not even name one specific thing that made them come to Jesus. As crowd behaviour goes, they simply came because something exciting was taking place.
Jesus knew what he was going to offer them. Even if the crowd was not aware of its specific needs, Jesus knew the specific gift he wanted to give. The blessing and sharing of the loaves was his sign to them that God, who fed their ancestors in the wilderness, will continue to feed them through him.
John 6, which begins with the sign of the loaves, is Jesus’ Eucharistic teaching. While some will call it intolerable language we call it absolutely necessary. The Eucharist is the source and summit of our lives. The Eucharist is life. We will never feel deserted, go hungry or be alone if we have the Eucharist. Come to Jesus. He is the Living Bread.
