Tuesday April 19th: He is Risen

“Go and find the brothers and tell them: I am ascending to my Father and your Father”

John 20:11-18

Today’s Gospel focuses on Mary’s journey of faith. Mary experiences deep grief and unspeakable loss at the death of her dear friend, Jesus. She is disconsolate as she stands outside the empty tomb crying. But the sound of Jesus’ voice and the use of her name give her the support she needed; she is no longer afraid and alone. She is energized by the knowledge that Jesus is alive and she is filled with joy and hope.

Just as the risen Jesus sends Mary out as a missionary to bring the Good news of his resurrection, so too, we are sent to bring good news to all peoples. The Easter story calls us to abandon the hopelessness that entombs us and to go out and proclaim Jesus’ victory over death. We do this by bearing witness to the presence of the risen Christ in the events of our lives.

Lord, teach us to be in solidarity with others in their times of distress and help them to rise from the tombs that enslave them. Amen
