Friday April 1st: Jesus was non-confrontational

Jesus avoided the Jewish authorities

John 7: 1 – 2. 10. 25 – 30

The gospel mentioned, twice, that Jesus avoided confrontation with Jewish leadership. He went to Jerusalem and remained hidden. The people saw him and wondered if the authorities have finally made up their minds about him.

Making up our minds about Jesus is an important aspect of the Lenten season. The Lenten disciplines we undertake are not for themselves, but to facilitate a deeper encounter and relationship with the Lord. We do not want Him to avoid us or remain hidden, nor do we want to avoid him. Though Jesus avoided the Jewish authorities he could not remain silent. The Word of God, whether it is the person of Jesus or His message, cannot remain silent or hidden.

Jesus’ message is just as important to us as is His presence since every aspect of his life and preaching is valuable. This Lenten season is an opportunity to renew ourselves in Him, hence the importance of making up our minds about Him.
