“For everyone who exalts himself will be humbled, but the one who humbles himself will be exalted”
Luke 18:9-14
In today’s Gospel, Jesus tells the parable of the tax collector and the Pharisee. The Pharisee, focused on his holiness and righteousness, looks down on the tax collector, a despised character. He lists all his good deeds yet it is the humble, repentant prayer of the tax collector which touches the heart of God.
How many times are we caught up in our acts of righteousness and holiness that we become proud, looking down at others we deem “less holy”? The God we serve is full of mercy and love and He exalts the humble.
Lord, give us a spirit of humility. That everything we do will be done with love for others and with great humility. Give us eyes and hearts of mercy that see You in the rejected and those despised in society. Amen
