“Be merciful, even as your Father is merciful.”
Luke 6: 36-38
In Luke Chapter 6 Jesus defines the culture of the kingdom of God and it goes counter to the prevailing culture of the world. He describes God’s identity as merciful as He is just.
Justice and mercy may sound contradictory. How can God be both? Yet in Jesus’ parable of the day’s wage the master is both just and merciful. He pays an agreed just wage to those he hires early. Yet he is merciful to those he hires at the eleventh hour. (Mt 20: 1-16)
In today’s Gospel, Jesus is challenging us also to be merciful – in our own payment of wages, to migrants who arrive illegally, to those who have wronged us.
For God is merciful to us by forgiving our sins, even to going to the cross. ‘Forgive them Father for they know not what they do’ (Luke 23: 34)
