From the beginning God intended a man and a woman to come together in a life-long commitment.
Mark 10: 1 – 12
Today’s question, coming from the Gospel passage, concerns divorce. Some Pharisees asked if it was lawful for a man to divorce his wife. From his answer, it is clear that Jesus did not subscribe to divorce. Though it was lawful since the Law of Moses allowed it, it was not the way to settle marital difficulties.
Jesus took his listeners further back than Moses’ Law when he cited God’s intention for men and women concerning marriage. From the beginning God intended a man and a woman to come together in a life-long commitment.
True, life-long commitment is challenging but not impossible to live. Fidelity to anything or anyone will have its ups and downs. And when it is about marriage, people marry for better or worse, in sickness and in health, for richer or poorer. It implies that difficult moments are not cause for separation or divorce. According to the passage it is stubbornness that leads to divorce. The real culprit is stubbornness, not difficulties.
