Friday February 11th: Hear and proclaim

Anyone who acts in the name of Jesus, must be universal in scope and compassionate in outreach.

Mark 7: 31-37

Jesus’ mission of announcing the Good News and showing the compassionate face of the Father is universal. It was not meant only for the Israelites though it began with them. In Luke 4: 43 he pointedly said to the disciples that he must preach the Good News in other towns as well because that is why he came. Therefore, the principal characteristics of the Good News are missionary and universal.
Today’s gospel passage is an example of Jesus reaching out to announce Good News and show the Father’s compassion beyond Israel. He passed through the region of Tyre and Sidon, non-Jewish towns. They brought to him a deaf man who had an impediment in his speech.
Jesus healed the man, causing him to both hear and proclaim. Jesus reached out so that all may hear and proclaim. The same is expected of us today. Anyone who acts in the name of Jesus, must be universal in scope and compassionate in outreach.
