‘It is not the healthy who need the doctor, but the sick. I came to call not the upright, but sinners.’
Mark 2:13-17
“It have too much hypocrites in church!” – Over the years, I have heard this response from persons who have decided that they no longer see the value of attending Mass . The words of Mark 2:17, however, console us, that Jesus recognises the need for us, who are sinners, to come to Him.
There is no quick fix to automatically becoming holy. It is a continuous journey with highs and lows, and as we worship in community we are all called to support one another, as we all need God in our lives.
Jesus did not look at the tax collectors from a place a judgment, but rather mercy and compassion. The acceptance and call of Levi may have been unexpected, but I am sure this would have motivated him and others to change, and so he emerged as an outstanding evangelist.
Lord, as we chart our way forward in 2022, help us improve our acceptance of ourselves and others so that your purpose may be realised for your kingdom. Amen.
