He is the Word that was with God and was God.
John 1: 1-18
The prologue of John’s gospel appears several times during the Christmas season, today being one of them. The prologue highlights certain truths about Jesus, his relationship with God the Father and with human beings.
The prologue takes us back to the beginning, not the beginning of creation but much farther, to the beginning in God. He is the Word that was with God and was God. That Word came and lived with us. John does not present a narrative as Matthew and Luke do. He simply comes directly to the point of Jesus’ origin, relationship to the Father and his coming into the human community.
The prologue briefly mentions that Jesus, the Word, is the life, light and truth of God. The rest of the gospel will show how these are true in the lives of specific individuals and humanity. The prologue is a beautiful, poetic way of capturing the essence of Jesus, his purpose and ministry. It pays, to take some time to read and reflect on this word slowly, and savour each verse.
