We in turn are reminded that there is something ‘God-like’ in the way we are.
Luke 1:39-45
When Mary ran as quickly as she could to a house in the hill country of Judah, the house of Zechariah and her cousin Elizabeth who was pregnant, she was carrying on a tradition that is well known among Caribbean women and all over the world. It is customary for some female relative to go to spend time with a mother who is expecting.
Here in the meeting of two pregnant women was an encounter with God’s own living Word in the flesh, Jesus in his mother’s womb. We are reminded then that in the incarnation, when God becomes a human being, God embraces all that is human, our likes, our habits and traditions.
In the word becoming flesh, God bows low before the wonder of our humanity and we in turn are reminded that there is something ‘God-like’ in the way we are. It is definitely not sinful to love oneself, to love one’s own culture and race…none of this is opposed to being a good Christian and follower of Jesus.
