He answered, ‘I will, sir,’ but he did not go
Matthew 21:28-32
When I collaborated with my darling wife, Sandee, on this Gospel, she remarked that the second son reminded her of us marketers – always promising more than we can deliver. Ouch!
But her comment caused me to reflect on us as church, and myself in particular. Do we implicitly promise to live in the way of Christ, and then consciously live in the way of the world?
Do we live as married singles? Neglect our daily prayers? Wink at gender and ethnic off-colour jokes in the workplace? Cheat employees or don’t give a fair day’s work? Despair and not place our trust in Christ?
Instead, let us be good marketers, like the first son, under-promising and over delivering: challenging ourselves to live in the world but not of the world.
