The lesson from today’s gospel is, do not allow life to swamp us to the point of having no time for God.
Luke 17: 26 – 37.
The gospel describes the routines of daily living. People were eating, drinking, marrying, buying, selling, planting and building right up to the day Noah went into the ark and right up to the day Lot left Sodom. The stories and events surrounding Noah and Lot are about unsuspecting people being swept away by calamity.
While we must engage in the routines of life, we cannot afford to be so caught up in them that we sacrifice salvation. We cannot take it for granted that life will continue in the same way indefinitely. Nor can we take it for granted that no tragedy will ever visit us.
Noah and Lot warned their respective communities, but they did not listen. Jesus had been constantly telling us to be alert, be prepared and anticipate the day when the Son of Man will return. That it will happen is a sure thing.
The lesson from today’s gospel is, do not allow life to swamp us to the point of having no time for God.
