‘They had forgotten the holiness of God and the sacredness of the space dedicated to Him.”
John 2:13-22
Nothing is wrong with a good fundraiser. After-Mass sales at the back of the church are practically a hallmark of the local Catholic church, a wonderful way to build community, and to support the work of different ministries.
In the temple, things being sold would be used to perform Jewish sacrifices, so at first glance nothing was amiss here. I think Jesus was angry because the people had allowed their ritual activities to take pride of place over pure worship and conversion of heart. They had forgotten the holiness of God and the sacredness of the space dedicated to Him. The house of God had become a place of business and profit. The Jews had lost the sense of the sacred, yet they had the temerity to ask Jesus to justify his anger and actions in trying to make things right.
Today, let us consider how we are treating the sanctuaries of God, be it our Church buildings or our own bodies, the temple of the Holy Spirit.
