Saturday October 30th: The Sin of Pride; the Virtue of Humility

“The proud heart is an abomination to the Lord…” Proverbs 16:5

Luke 14:1, 7-11

In today’s Gospel passage, Jesus illustrates the darkness of the sin of Pride: an arrogant, empty pride – call it ‘puffed-up pride’.
Puffed-up pride makes us think of ourselves as being better than others. Such pride caused the guests in the parable to seek the places of honour, based on their own sense of self-importance.
Each one of us is infected with the virus of pride. Pride can take many faces, each face rooted selfishly in arrogant self-love. Whatever guise pride takes, if left unchecked, it invades our hearts and we become its ugly manifestation.
Which face/s of pride have you become?
In our spiritual life, we must fight this vice in whatever guise it presents itself. The only way to get the better of pride is to practice humility. While this may sound like a contradiction, we have to pray for the grace to be transformed.
Always keep in mind the vengeance Our Lord reserves for the proud and His promises in favour of the humble.
Strive always to live in God’s presence and practice Christian virtues.
