Friday, October 22nd: Signs of the times

Luke 12: 54 – 59

Reading the signs of the times is about allowing the gospel to guide trends and behaviours so that values and virtue stand out.

Jesus commended the people for being able to interpret the face of the earth and the sky. Of course, the more they did it, the more accurate they became. He says that the same skill can be developed in relation to the kingdom of God and human relationships. He referred to it as interpreting these times, in other places the term reading the signs of the times was used.

Reading the signs of the times is about making good discernment or judgements about how to act. The second example in the gospel is about deciding on the best course of action in settling a dispute. Of course the litigation way is to make the errant person pay. The kingdom way is to settle amicably long before it reaches court. The better way is to preserve both parties so that no one is exposed or dragged into prison.

Reading the signs of the times is about allowing the gospel to guide trends and behaviours so that values and virtue stand out.
