Founder of the Mawasi Experience, Peter Telfer, died at 2.45 a.m. today Friday October 15, three days after the musical group he founded marked its 41st anniversary. He was 63.
Prayers were being offered for Telfer’s recovery during his two-week hospitalisation and there were daily updates circulating on the WhatsApp messaging service. Many have extended condolences and paid tribute to Telfer on his Facebook page.
Telfer and the Mawasi Experience are well-known for their musical contributions to the Catholic community and many local, cultural productions.
He was the creative coordinator, drummer, percussionist and composer. For many years the group practised for performances at the Sacred Heart RC Church, Port of Spain where they kept their musical instruments.
Every month Mawasi added to the liturgy at the church’s 11 a.m. Sunday Masses. Telfer founded Mawasi Experience on Sunday October 12, 1980, and over the years they produced new liturgical music with a Caribbean feel.
Funeral arrangements are to be made.
