Wednesday September 15th: Loving beyond what we expect

“…we played the flute for you, and you did not dance; we wailed, and you did not weep”

Luke 7: 31-35

How many of us love others with an expectation or condition attached to it? It seems as though sometimes we play a ‘call and response’ game with our relationships, and our stewardship. We give our time, talent and treasure but expect that we will be acknowledged or even rewarded by the people around us. No wonder so many are finding it very difficult to stay committed in marriages and church ministries.
Jesus recognized our limitations, when he compared the people of His generation (and ours) to children complaining: “…we played the flute for you, and you did not dance; we wailed, and you did not weep” v32. Could you imagine the extent of the renewal that would take place in our relationships if we were to love in the way God loves us, and serve others just because of God’s grace in our lives. This will make for a more dynamic church with more dynamic Catholic Christians.
Lord, help me to love and serve as You do; without condition or expectation. Amen
