The door closing was final to those who were not prepared.
Matthew 25: 1 – 13
There is a ring of finality about the gospel. It states: “Those who were ready went in with him and the door was closed.” One could almost hear a huge door slamming shut.
Those who were ready were the wise ones. They were both prepared and alert. They falling asleep was not about being in a dead slumber. They fell asleep in the way all tired people fall asleep. Unlike the foolish ones, they had everything in place for the moment of the bridegroom’s arrival. The door closing was final to those who were not prepared.
Unpreparedness in this case was more than missing opportunities or forgetting. It was about carelessness. We can become so careless with our spirituality, prayer and worship that it does not matter what happens to our relationship with God. We may be doing the same things as everyone else, but putting no heart or commitment into it. Lack of preparation is having no oil. Oil is a symbol of faith, hope, love, trust, and so on.
