A migrant family went to the Jesus Christ Makes the Difference Double B Supermarket at Government House Road, Tobago in May this year to purchase food.
The business is among 30 grocers listed by the Living Water Community where migrants can go with a QR Code to purchase food items they chose.
When the family of two adults and a child were at the cashier to process the transaction, staff realised the machine to process the code was not functioning properly.
LWC was contacted, and the grocery advised a technician from Trinidad would have to check the machine or it had to be sent back. “The person had already shopped…had already picked up the items,” reported a staff member who preferred not to be named. What to tell the family? They would have come with the expectation of leaving with foodstuff.
The Catholic News was told, “When we told them the machine was not working. They were trying to figure out what to do, talking among themselves. We may not have been able to communicate verbally but physically, you saw all the reactions, all the body, all the face reactions.”
The LWC was asked if the food could be given until the machine was fixed. The customer said he could return for the items because the code could not be used at another grocery. The family’s address and phone number were taken. For the family not to leave empty handed, “some members of staff said, ‘I will put $100’, and somebody else said ‘Okay, I will put something’…”
Looking back, it was something they were “led to do” so that the family was comfortable.
LWC was informed the transaction was “covered”. Jesus Christ Makes the Difference was the slogan chosen by the owner of the business in recognition of the One who stood by him when he needed help. He believes the name would reach more people than his own.
