‘For it is to such as these (children) that the kingdom of heaven belongs’
Matthew 19: 13 -15
In Matthew 11:25 and again in Matthew 18:4 Jesus thanks the Father for hiding the kingdom from the wise and the intelligent and revealing them to the childlike. Here again in Matthew 19 he reiterates that the kingdom belongs to those who are childlike – those of humble status.
Reflecting on my life, it is those times when I am confident, self-assured with a sense of pride in some accomplishment that I least turn to God. And it is when I am at my lowest, defeated, unsure of myself, that I cry out to God for help.
God opposes the proud, but gives grace to the humble. James 4:6
Lord, help me always to keep in mind that in you I can bear much fruit; but apart from you I can do nothing. Amen.
