Friday August 13th: Together forever

Jesus teaches that marriage is the most appropriate school of love and commitment and should be safeguarded.

Matthew 19: 3 – 12

The Pharisees’ question on divorce was a test, therefore, Jesus should have ignored them but he did not. Instead he turned this test into a teaching moment.

In response Jesus took his listeners back to God’s original intention for marriage which says, from the beginning God intended a man and a woman to come together to form a union which no one ought to divide. By Divine design marriage is life-long and indissoluble.

People do not marry to divorce. They marry because they love each other and want to spend their lives together. At least at their inception, most marriages agree with God’s vision. The key is not to lose that vision.

But life is not without its difficulties. Marital difficulties are often intimate and deep and offended spouses take marital offences personally and many become so hardheaded they are unteachable then. People’s hardness due to offense made Moses prescribe divorce. Instead of finding a way out, Jesus teaches that marriage is the most appropriate school of love and commitment and should be safeguarded.
