Help us to follow your path, Jesus.
Matthew 18: 15–20
Jesus gives us a mechanism to follow when ‘your brother does something wrong’. Jesus says to approach the person to try to settle the affair, then bring the witness of just a few others, then call on the church community. Only then can you say you have done all you could. These steps are all in an effort to bring your neighbour back on the right path and to be in agreement, for the Gospel tells us that agreement, even between two on earth is powerful in heaven.
We however, tend to approach our brother’s wrongdoing in the exact opposite way. We cut them off first, tell ‘the story’ to everyone who has ears to hear until years later we are still telling ‘the story’ to the few. Seldom do we even reach the starting point suggested by Jesus, which is to approach the person on a personal level and try to ‘have it out with him alone, between your two selves.’ Help us to follow your path, Jesus.
