Feast of Saint Martha
If you had been here, my brother would not have died.
John 11:19 -27
Martha’s blunt statement to Jesus would be expressed, but with much more tone, by millions of those gripped by the unfathomable and inconsolable grief of the loss of loved ones. Not only a brother but sister and father as well, entire families, relatives, friends, owing to the ravages of the Covid-19 pandemic, natural disasters, accidents, crime, suicidal and natural deaths.
The immeasurable anguish conjures mixed feelings: that God had the ultimate power to save their loved ones; angry that He didn’t; questioning the extent of His love on the assumption that He withheld it. Physical death is an inescapable experience of all but our faith that Jesus Himself is the Resurrection and the Life, as professed by Martha, brings promise of eternal life.
Saint Martha, in these times of inordinate distress may your profession of faith in Jesus as the Resurrection and the Life be a consolation to all believers. May our faith in Jesus be strengthened and our reliance on His promises increased that we may reflect the hope and joy of the Gospel to others.
