If our work is sanctified and directed towards God, there is balance and fulfilment.
Matthew 6: 24-34
Why do we labour? This question stumps me as we commemorate this holiday. Of course, we have needs, the Lord knows about them all. Each of us has a responsibility and vocation to work. However, Jesus is more concerned about the posture of our heart, our motives towards what he has entrusted to us.
If our work is sanctified and directed towards God, there is balance and fulfilment. If it is not, then there is an imbalance and overconsumption, materialism, and avarice arise. This results in ingratitude and valuing the gifts rather than the GIVER of the gift. Without realising it, we try to fill our empty spiritual needs using physical means- which proves futile.
This can ultimately lead to overworking, neglecting our health and loved ones and even, addiction and indebtedness. Today, Jesus is calling us to reprioritize and to sanctify our labours. It is not our job to worry about how or when He will come through; only to trust that that He will. In the meantime, let all we do, glorify God as we trust him to provide.
