Earthly treasures are tangible and vulnerable; they pretend to offer security but in fact do not.
Matthew 6:19-23.
Today’s Gospel speaks of treasure. A treasure is both the thing we value most and depend on for our future. Since it represents security, we save it, we protect it and we defend it.
Today Jesus tells us not to store up treasure on earth since here it is susceptible. Earthly treasures are tangible and vulnerable; they pretend to offer security but in fact do not. Rust, fire, decay, theft can deprive us of our treasure in an instant.
Instead of earthly treasures, Jesus says that we ought to store up treasure in heaven where they can neither be stolen nor decay. Heavenly treasure is different. It is spiritual. It is faith and eternal life.
No one can steal our faith. No calamity or disaster can rob us of our faith. Faith is our security. A person of faith is like one who builds on rock. No disaster or threat can shake such a person. We must protect and defend our faith at all times.
