Friday June 11th: Feast of the Sacred Heart of Jesus.

Driven by love, Jesus’ heart has taken our human misery, sin and death to the cross.

John 19: 31 – 37

The heart is the symbol of commitment and love. Where our heart is there would our treasure be also (Matthew 6: 21). We give our heart to one we love. We say our heart is bursting with love for someone.

Jesus’ heart is the symbol of divine love for us. St. Margaret Mary Alacoque spoke of her vision in which Jesus allowed her to rest her head upon his heart and he spoke to her of his love for humanity. Jesus’ heart is bursting with love for each one of us.

Today’s gospel passage speaks of Jesus’ heart being pierced and out flowed blood and water. The image relates to the countless numbers of people whose hearts bleed out of love for those who suffer injustice, wars, strife, illness, poverty and other forms of distress.

Driven by love, Jesus’ heart has taken our human misery, sin and death to the cross. His pierced heart has brought us redemption and salvation. His love for us is beyond words.
