Bridgetown diocese prepares for new bishop

BARBADOS

Bishop-elect Neil Sebastian Scantlebury will be ordained as the fourth Bishop of Bridgetown, Barbados June 11, the Solemnity of the Most Sacred Heart of Jesus, 10 a.m. at St Patrick’s RC Cathedral, St Michael.

Fr Scantlebury, 55, was a priest of the Diocese of St Thomas, in the US Virgin Islands and appointed Apostolic Administrator of the Bridgetown diocese by the Rome-based Congregation for the Evangelization of the Peoples effective March 1.

The Bishop-elect succeeds Archbishop Jason Gordon who held the post from 2011 until he was appointed Archbishop of Port of Spain in 2017.

During his 25 years as a priest, Bishop-elect Scantlebury served the Diocese of St Thomas as a Chancellor, Consultor, member of the Administrative Board of Catholic Charities, member of the Administrative Board for Child Protection, and member of the teaching faculty of Saints Peter and Paul High School.
