Friday May 21st: Second chances

Jesus always gives us an opportunity to redeem ourselves.

John 21: 15 – 19.

Today’s gospel is about second chances. Peter was given a chance to redeem himself after he denied Jesus three times. (See Luke 22: 54 – 62). Jesus asked Peter, three times, if he loved him. And three times Peter said: “Yes Lord, you know I love you.”

Jesus does not turn a blind eye to our offences but he does not hold us to them either. Instead he helps us to heal and move on so that we can continue to witness to his love.

Jesus always gives us an opportunity to redeem ourselves. The reason for this is simply because he did not come to condemn, but to save. (John 3: 17). In his desire to save us, he gives us opportunities to make amends for our bad choices.

Today’s gospel is about opening to the renewing love of the risen Christ. We are all capable of deeper love. Every day Jesus gives us the chance to discover and live that love.
