Season of Creation Challenge 2021

What is the Season of Creation Challenge 2021?

The Franciscan Institute’s fourth annual Season of Creation Challenge (SOC Challenge) begins on May 24 and closes on September 23.

The SOC Challenge targets Catholic primary and secondary schools, youth groups and parishes in Trinidad and Tobago, Grenada, and Saint Lucia. Participants are invited to develop ideas based on the Season of Creation theme for 2021: A home for all? Renewing the Oikos of God.

STEP 1:

Participants can choose from one (1) of the five (5) categories listed below to prepare their presentation.

Categories:

  1. Pollinators – A submission could be done about the different pollinators found on your island, such as endangered or local species.
  2. Marine Life – Research and submit based on endangered species life found in and around your island e.g., flying fish.
  3. Family Tree – A submission could be done about your family tree or an animal or plant in your island.
  4. Building a Home – Build a home for animals e.g., bats, birds or bees and feed them regularly. Record the progression and updates by taking photos and/or videos.
  5. Vegetation – Submit based on local vegetation found on your island that is becoming scarce e.g., passion fruit.

STEP 2:

Participants can submit their presentation based on theme and one (1) chosen category using any of the following formats:

  • Video
  • Spoken Word
  • Poetry
  • Art Piece
  • Essay
  • Article
  • Photos
  • PowerPoint Presentation

STEP 3:

Fill out the Script Template including information on the presentation.

– What inspired the presentation?

– How is it expected to create environmental/social/community awareness on the theme: A home for all? Renewing the Oikos of God.

STEP 4:

All submissions (presentation and written script) MUST be emailed to the Franciscan Institute office at submitfi@gmail.com no later than Thursday September 23, 2021. Note: submission sent after the deadline date would not be considered.

STEP 5:

Participants’ submission of entry criteria are as follows:

– Each school, parish and youth groups will be allowed to submit a maximum of three (3) entries for each category.

The details are as follows:

Primary schools can only submit a maximum of three (3) entries for each category for:

– Each year group (e.g., Grade 1, Grade 2, Grade 3, Grade 4, and Grade 5)

Secondary schools can only submit a maximum of three (3) entries for each category for:

– Forms: 1– 2

– Forms: 3 –4

– Forms: 5 – 6

Parishes or Youth Groups can only submit a maximum of three (3) entries for each category for:

– Age group: 5–12 years old

– Age group: 13–18 years old

– Age group: 18 years old and over

N.B. All material MUST be original. It may not infringe on the copyright, trademark, or other rights of any individual. Children under the age of 18 years must receive permission from a parent, teacher, or guardian to submit photo or video presentations.

Note: participants not adhering to the entry criteria are subjected to disqualification.

STEP 6:

Season of Creation Challenge Duration:

Begins from Monday, May 24 to Thursday, September 23, 2021

The deadline for email submission: Thursday, September 23 by 12 midnight.

STEP 7:

Judges would assess each submission according to the following areas:

  1. Creativity and Originality
  2. Community/Environmental Impact (Immediate or Potential)
  3. Relevance to the Theme
  4. Quality of Presentation

STEP 8:

Winners will be selected from the various age groups and creative categories listed above. Winners and participants would be celebrated at the 4th annual St Francis Canticle Creation Award Ceremony which will take place virtually on Saturday October 23, 2021 from 9 a.m.  – noon.

STEP 9:

Who can participate?

The Challenge is open to Catholic primary and secondary schools, Catholic youth groups and parishes in Trinidad and Tobago, Grenada, and St Lucia.

STEP 10:

Prizes

  1. Overall winner(s) will be selected from the following categories and age groups:
  • Best Pollinators Submission
  • Best Marine Life Submission
  • Best Family Tree Submission
  • Best Building a Home Submission
  • Best Vegetation Submission
  1. Prizes will be awarded to the Most Outstanding School, Most Outstanding Youth or Youth Group and Most Outstanding Parish in Trinidad and Tobago, Grenada, and St Lucia.
  2. All winners and participants would be celebrated and recognised at the virtual St Francis Canticle Creation Award Ceremony carded for Saturday October 23, 2021 from 9 a.m. – noon.
  3. All prizes would be distributed or collected at the Franciscan Institute office in Trinidad and Tobago, Grenada, and St Lucia.
  4. Selected winners would be invited to present their submissions during the prize-giving ceremony.
