Friday May 7th: A Friend in ‘deed’

Jesus calls us friends, not servants.

John 15: 12 – 17.

There are two things we can take from today’s passage. The first is, Jesus’ relationship with us and the second is the fruits of the relationships we establish.

Jesus calls us friends, not servants. A friendship relationship is not about getting the work done as servants do or completing the business as contracts bind us to. A friendship relationship is about sharing. It is friends sharing their lives in every way – confidence, trust, mutual dependence, etc..

The fruits of true friendship include sharing hearts, going the extra mile without fuss and even giving one’s life for one’s friend. Jesus is a true friend to each one of us. He not only shares himself totally with us, especially in the Eucharist, He has given his life for us on the cross.

His sharing of himself with us means we can continually draw life and strength from him. His dying on the cross means we will forever have eternal life. Jesus is indeed a true friend.
