Wednesday April 14th: Hope and beauty

“For God so loved the world that he gave his only son…”

John 3:16-21

John 3:16 is one of the most widely quoted verses in the Bible. It fills us with hope. Today as we grapple with the news of the volcano, in solidarity with the people of St Vincent, we are apt to lose sight of this hope, and the love of God for this world.

This passage reminds us that in the midst of the ash there is hope and beauty if we only have eyes to see. I think of the resilience of the Vincentians, the spontaneous charity of so many, the knowledge of the experts, the awesomeness of God, the cycle of nature replenishing the soil.

This Sunday’s Gospel Jn 20:19 Jesus shows his wounds to St Thomas. The pain and passion of the crucifixion giving rise to the joy of the resurrection. And he says these amazing words… “as the Father sent me so am I sending you”. We also are called to love this world and work to establish his kingdom in it.
