But now He showed how perfect His love was
John 13: 1 – 15
Whoever wants to be first must place himself last of all and be the servant of all, Mark 9:35. Jesus was trying all the time to teach His disciples that true greatness in His kingdom is humility and service. This latest lesson possibly stemming from a quarrel amongst the disciples as to who would be greatest in the kingdom. If I, then, Lord and Master, have washed your feet, you should wash each other’s feet.
Not just a physical symbol to demonstrate humility and service, Jesus also explains “if I do not wash you, you can have nothing in common with me”, alluding to a spiritual cleansing. Bernard of Clairvaux said “Feet-washing is cleansing of those daily offenses which seem inevitable for those who walk in the dust of the world”.
While we may not have the physical symbol this year, I pray that this Lenten season still allowed us to cleanse ourselves spiritually as we prepare to celebrate the Paschal Triduum.
