Walking with Lizzie: Welcome home

Grüne Bergspitze mit Weg nach oben unter blauem Himmel.

By Lizzie Hernandez

After my run this morning, I was at the Stop sign and really studied this sign. To me it beckoned ‘Welcome home’.

Have you ever read the story of the Prodigal Son in Luke 15:11-32? In the story, a father has two sons. The younger son asks for his portion of inheritance from his father, who grants his request. This son, however, is prodigal (i.e., wasteful and extravagant), thus squandering his fortune and eventually becoming destitute. As a consequence, he now must return home empty-handed and intent to beg his father to accept him back as a servant. To the son’s surprise, he is not scorned by his father but welcomed back with celebration and a welcoming party. Envious, the older son refuses to participate in the festivities. The father tells the older son: “you are ever with me, and all that I have is yours, but thy younger brother was lost and now he is found”-Wikipedia summary.

No matter how badly the son behaved, and no matter for how long he behaved badly, his father was glad to welcome him home. It’s like that with our Father in Heaven. He is looking out for us, just waiting for us to come home. No matter what you have done or how badly you feel, know that our Heavenly Father always has a warm welcome for us. Once you have life, you have hope and even now at this point you can run safely back to the arms of your loving Father knowing a warm welcome awaits.
