Their mission was about character assassination of both the woman and Jesus.
John 8: 1-11
The scribes and Pharisees were deliberate in their plot to condemn Jesus whose actions throughout was one of Mercy.Their mission was about character assassination of both the woman and Jesus. She was caught in adultery. They also sought to discredit Jesus, because the Law states that she should be condemned to death.
Should she be stoned, (the Jewish Law demands it), Jesus would lose his name for Love and Mercy and could never be the friend of sinners. If she is not, He would be encouraging others to disobey the Law.
This story continues today, and like the scribes we condemn others. What Jesus did is important, He condemned no one. He said, however, “If there is one of you who is without sin, cast a stone.” In short, examine yourself. Then to the woman, He said, “Has anyone condemned you? Neither do I”
Today the word is challenging us to a higher standard, not to condemn but to be instruments of Mercy and Love. “Go, sin no more”.
